TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 49-ranked Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday afternoon in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association women's tennis match at the NSU Tennis Courts.
The Bearcats swept the doubles point, winning all three matches to open the day. Camilla Franzin and Marielena Muench defeated Lucia Bontempo and Tegan Heaton, 6-3, while Miru Nonaka and Alva Norberg earned a 6-1 victory over Adel Ismagulova and Annika Kleinhans. Polina Gontaryk and Carolina Oliveira closed out the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win over Camila de Michele and Sofia Kotliarova.
In singles, NSU picked up two victories but could not overcome the early deficit. Kotliarova rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 win over Gontaryk, while Kleinhans edged Oliveira 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.
Muench secured the opening singles point for the Bearcats with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Heaton. Norberg followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Ismagulova. Nonaka downed Bontempo in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, and Franzin capped the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over de Michele.
With the loss, Northeastern State fell to 5-9 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA. Northwest Missouri improved to 10-7 and 4-2 in conference play.
The RiverHawks will look to bounce back in their next MIAA outing on Thursday against Central Oklahoma.
