TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — A three-run homer in the sixth inning by No. 14 Rogers State handed Northeastern State a 6-2 setback in Game 1 at RiverHawks Park on Saturday.
Maddie Messenger had two hits as the RiverHawks missed opportunities early, leaving the bases loaded twice. Northeastern State drew five walks but was limited to four hits, falling to 15-32 overall and 8-15 in the MIAA.
After two scoreless innings, the Hillcats jumped ahead with a two-out double down the left-field line. In the bottom half, NSU pulled even with an RBI single from Messenger to score
Lauryn Heinle from second. Later in the third, the RiverHawks took the lead on a nine-pitch, bases-loaded walk by
Drew Hawkins.
Northeastern State held the lead until the sixth, when Rogers State hit a three-run homer to center. In the seventh, RSU added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run homer to right-center.
Gracie Turner (5-8) threw 103 pitches and went six innings for NSU.
Rogers State improved to 34-12 overall and 15-8 in the MIAA with the win in Game 1.
