RiverHawks Rally Past Bearcats

PRYOR, Okla. -- Northeastern State rallied for seven unanswered runs to earn a 10-7 victory over Northwest Missouri on Sunday, salvaging a doubleheader split at Tiger Field and snapping a 12-game losing streak.

The RiverHawks (11-23, 8-12 MIAA) got two-hit performances from five different batters and used a late surge to overcome a four-run deficit. Mason Ruiz delivered the go-ahead hit in the seventh inning, helping Northeastern State even the series ahead of Monday's finale.

Northwest Missouri (16-17, 10-10 MIAA) took control early, plating two runs in the second inning on a double. NSU got on the board in the fourth thanks to a pickoff attempt that allowed a run to score.

The Bearcats extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth, but the RiverHawks began to chip away. Holden Yoder singled with two outs to drive in one run, and another came across on a Northwest error, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

After Northwest added a solo home run in the sixth, NSU's offense came to life. Diego Murillo sparked the comeback with RBI singles in both the sixth and seventh innings. Caleb Reynolds, Xavier Sanchez and Gage Williams each contributed RBI singles as the RiverHawks pulled ahead.

Both teams finished with 13 hits on the day, but it was Northeastern State that made them count down the stretch.

Trey Havens (1-0) picked up his first win of the season in relief. The senior right-hander struck out two over 1.1 innings in his 13th appearance of the year.

With momentum on their side, the RiverHawks will return to Rousey Field in Tahlequah on Monday to host the series finale. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
