WICHITA, Kan. -- Northeastern State struck twice in the second half but couldn't keep pace with Newman, falling 4-2 Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Field.
The RiverHawks (3-3-2, 0-2 GAC/MIAA) trailed 1-0 at halftime before Newman extended its advantage early in the second period. Jack Smith pulled NSU within 2-1 in the 59th minute with his first goal of the season, but the Jets (4-1-2, 1-0) answered less than 10 minutes later.
Miguel Carrasquinho provided another spark for the RiverHawks, scoring his first collegiate goal in the 69th minute to cut the deficit to 3-2. That would be as close as NSU came, as Newman's Kei Nagakura sealed the result with a goal in the 78th minute.
Newman edged the RiverHawks in total shots, 12-11, while NSU placed six on goal. Jet goalkeeper Francisco Pinochet came up with four saves. RiverHawks keeper Cameron McColloch recorded one save before being relieved by Jaron Noble late in the second half.
Northeastern State finished with six corner kicks and saw four players register multiple shot attempts, including Smith, Carrasquinho, and Carter Adams.Â
The RiverHawks will look to rebound at home when they host Harding on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
