SEARCY, Ark. -- Northeastern State rallied in the second half to secure a 2-1 road win over Harding on Sunday afternoon at Stevens Soccer Complex.
Harding struck first in the fifth minute when Whitney Thomas converted a free kick from the left side into the right of the 18-yard box, assisted by Skylar Henley. The Bison carried their 1-0 lead into halftime despite several strong saves from RiverHawks goalkeeper Rebecca Partyka, who finished with seven stops.
The momentum shifted after the break. In the 53rd minute, Olivia Burnes found herself on a breakaway and slotted home the equalizer, beating Harding keeper Maysa Willis in a one-on-one chance. Sydney Taylor then delivered the game-winner in the 74th minute, taking a long ball down the right side from Brynn Baldon and finishing for her second goal of the young season.
Harding (0-1) pressed late, out-shooting Northeastern State 15-12 overall, but could not beat Partyka again.
Taylor and Burnes paced the RiverHawks' attack with a goal apiece, while Baldon picked up an assist. Partyka's effort in net helped Northeastern State (2-0) remain unbeaten through its opening weekend.
Northeastern State continues non-conference play next week, and will travel to Oklahoma Baptist this Wednesday.
