Northeastern State Uses Fourth-Quarter Run to Down UAFS

FORT SMITH, Ark. -- Northeastern State erupted for 14 unanswered points to open the fourth quarter and buried Arkansas–Fort Smith 67–53 on Friday night at the Stubblefield Center, snapping a decade-long road drought against the Lions.

The RiverHawks (13-3, 5-2 MIAA) watched their 13-point first-half lead evaporate in the third quarter as UAFS rallied and briefly grabbed a 37-36 advantage with six minutes to go in the period. But that was the last gasp for the Lions (2-14, 1-6), who were held to just six points in the final frame.

Deyanna Douglas led Northeastern State with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, with eight of those points coming during the team's fourth-quarter surge. Annaston Brown added 10 points off the bench, while Reese Shirey chipped in 9 points and 5 assists.

The RiverHawks shot 49 percent from the field and dominated inside, outscoring Fort Smith 36-20 in the paint. NSU also converted 20 points off 17 UAFS turnovers.

Gabrielle Tilley buried a go-ahead three-pointer just seconds into the fourth quarter, kickstarting the RiverHawks' 14-0 blitz. NSU led by as many as 17 late.

Fort Smith's Keytonna Ross Wilson and Haleigh Jackson each scored 11 points to lead the Lions, who were just 2-of-11 from the floor in the fourth.

The victory marked NSU's first win in Fort Smith since Nov. 2014 and completed a regular-season sweep over the Lions in MIAA play.

Northeastern State returns home Thursday to face Emporia State at 5:30 p.m.
