RiverHawks Roll Past Newman 104-62, Give Havens Career Win No. 200

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Northeastern State lit up the scoreboard for the fifth time this season, cruising past Newman 104-62 on Friday night in the NSU Event Center. The win not only marked the RiverHawks' most lopsided victory ever over the Jets — it also gave head coach Ja Havens his 200th career victory.

The RiverHawks (11-7, 4-5 MIAA) poured in 63 points in the first half, their highest-scoring half of the season, and led by as many as 47 en route to their sixth consecutive win over Newman. NSU now boasts an 8-1 record against the Jets in Tahlequah.

Xavier Glenn led a balanced attack with 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while Nehemiah Weber added 20 points and five assists. Twelve different RiverHawks scored, and the bench accounted for 40 points in the runaway win.
NSU was firing on all cylinders offensively, connecting on 42 field goals and dishing out 23 assists. The RiverHawks also dominated the paint with a 52-34 edge and controlled the boards with a 49-37 rebounding advantage.

Defensively, the RiverHawks forced 13 turnovers and held Newman (5-14, 1-9 MIAA) to 38 percent shooting. Syris Williams and Terrell Wright led the Jets with 11 points apiece.

The 104 points marked NSU's fifth triple-digit outing of the season, and the 42-point margin of victory was the largest ever against Newman.

The celebration continued postgame as Havens, in his sixth season at NSU, was honored for reaching the 200-win milestone in his head coaching career following the contest.

"I honestly didn't know, I think, more importantly, we were 1-0 today, and that's win 11 overall, and win number four, and in the league for us. So that's important," said head coach Ja Havens.

"I just loved our response. You know it didn't go our way last night.  We were about as good as we've played ever as a group, got that first 20 minutes.  Really set the tone, and then it just seemed like that second half lasted forever …we got contributions across the board, did a good job of carrying our scouting report into the game, and limiting them, and just got off."

Northeastern State will look to keep its momentum going on Wednesday night on the road against Pittsburg State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
