TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --
Gabrielle Tilley scored a season-high 21 points and
Makala Bingley added a season-best 13 to lead Northeastern State past Newman 88-72 on Friday night at the NSU Event Center.
The RiverHawks (15-3, 7-2 MIAA) made it six straight wins over the Jets and improved to 7-1 against Newman in Tahlequah, flexing their home-court muscle once again.
Tilley was lights-out, going 5-of-8 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 at the line, while Bingley added eight rebounds and helped pace a RiverHawks bench that outscored Newman's reserves 45-33.
Annaston Brown and
McKenzie Smith chipped in 15 and 18 points, respectively, as NSU led from start to finish.
Northeastern State started strong with a 23-point first quarter and went into halftime up 50-41 after a 27-point second quarter fueled by back-to-back threes from Brown and Tilley. The RiverHawks maintained control the rest of the way, holding Newman (7-12, 1-9 MIAA) to just 12 fourth-quarter points.
Alexis Martin led the Jets with 16 points, while Jaeden McMillin added 15.
NSU shot 46% from the field and hit 9-of-18 from deep while converting 27-of-30 from the free-throw line.
The RiverHawks will look to keep the momentum rolling on the road when they face Pittsburg State on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and then travel to Missouri Southern on Saturday.
"We're taking care of what we're supposed to take care of for the most part," said head coach
Keith Ferguson. "If you want to be recognized, then you want to get some attention, you gotta go beat some teams that have a winning record."Â
"We gotta go take it on the road. So I think they're motivated. I don't know how they wouldn't be motivated. Two teams that we had leads in the fourth quarter, right, and we weren't able to close, so we're gonna find a way and get ready to play for another night."
