ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Freshman
Harry Neilson poured in a career-high 25 points, but Northeastern State couldn't overcome a decisive turnover margin in a 97-83 loss to Missouri Western on Saturday afternoon at MWSU Fieldhouse.
Neilson shot 11 of 14 from the field and added four rebounds in an efficient 33-minute performance to lead the RiverHawks (12-14, 5-12 MIAA).
Xavier Glenn added 21 points and six rebounds, and
Taven Washington chipped in 10 points. Northeastern State shot a blistering 61.4% from the field (35 of 57) but struggled at the free-throw line, converting 8 of 18 attempts.
Missouri Western (18-10, 10-7 MIAA) took control early and never trailed, building a 50-38 halftime lead. The Griffons stretched their advantage to as many as 23 points in the second half.
The difference proved to be turnovers. Missouri Western forced 16 NSU miscues while committing just four, a 16-to-4 disparity that translated into a 28-6 scoring advantage off turnovers. The Griffons capitalized repeatedly in transition, turning steals into points to keep the RiverHawks at bay.
Noah King led Missouri Western with 26 points, while Bode Goodman added 20.
Northeastern State returns home Wednesday to host Rogers State at 7:30 p.m.
