Five-Run Second Lifts Northeastern State Past Southwest Baptist, 8-4

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- Northeastern State used a five-run second inning and home runs from Korynn Tindel and Madison Nance to defeat Southwest Baptist 8-4 on Saturday afternoon.

The RiverHawks (8-7) pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of four Southwest Baptist errors to secure the non-conference victory.

After leaving runners stranded in the first, Northeastern State broke through in the second. Mattison Hamilton delivered a two-run double to left-center to open the scoring. Annsleigh Morris followed with an RBI single, and Ashlynn Turner added another run-scoring hit as NSU capitalized on defensive miscues to build a 5-0 lead.

Southwest Baptist (2-8) answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and added two more in the fifth to trim the deficit to 6-4. But the RiverHawks responded quickly.

Nance led off the fifth with a solo home run to extend the lead to 6-2. Tindel added insurance in the sixth, blasting a solo homer for the second consecutive game. Hamilton capped the scoring in the seventh with an RBI single, finishing 2 for 5 with three RBI. Tindel also recorded a multi-hit game, going 2 for 5 with two runs scored.

In the circle, Brooke Wyatt (2-1) earned the win, allowing four runs on five hits over five innings. Gracie Turner tossed two scoreless innings in relief to secure her first save of the season.

Northeastern State returns to action Tuesday with a 1 p.m. road contest at East Central.
