RiverHawks Fall to Panthers in Non-Conference Road Match

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Northeastern State men's tennis dropped a 7-0 decision to Drury University on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Cooper Tennis Complex.

The RiverHawks (0-2) picked up a highlight in doubles play at the No. 1 spot, where Alexander Edley and Mansur Khajimuradov teamed up for a 6-3 win. However, Drury (1-1) secured the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the early lead.

In singles, the Panthers took control early and never looked back. James Edley battled at No. 1 singles but ultimately fell 6-2, 7-5) to Jesus Gonzalez. At No. 2, Alexander Edley forced a third set but came up short against Matthieu Gachon, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. Manuel Brunengo also pushed in the opening set at No. 3 before falling 6-4, 2-6, 3-10.

Drury rounded out the win with straight-set victories in the remaining flights, closing out the match.

"I liked the way the men played with energy and team support today, but we just had way too many unforced errors, especially at crucial moments of the match to take down a team as good and experienced as Drury," said head coach Tim McLane.  "I also think I speak for everyone when I say we are excited to start competing outside since we train outdoors every day, so hopefully that helps us some next weekend."

Northeastern State will look to bounce back next week as they continue their spring schedule with Western New Mexico on Friday, Feb. 13.
