TAHLHEQUAH -- Late singles heroics provided Northeastern State with a ranked victory over #12 Midwestern State in women's tennis at home Thursday.
The RiverHawks (6-2) fell behind early with a pair of doubles losses.
Renata Morales and
Daisy Barrow overcome an early doubles loss to each provide singles wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, but the Mustangs (4-4) were in position to clinch after winning in No. 1 and No. 4 singles.
All focus fell on No. 5 and No. 6 singles play, where
Carla Alvarez Perez and
Lucia Bontempo legged out two-set victories to earn the come-from-behind win for NSU.
"Sometimes when matches are really tight, it doesn't come down to tactics. You've just got to want it more," head tennis coach
Tim McLane said. "Today, we wanted it more. I couldn't be happier with the way these ladies performed today."
Notably, today's singles victories marked the fourth straight for both Morales and Barrow. Meanwhile, Bontempo's win is her fifth in a row, additionally bringing her to 3-0 in No. 6 singles for the season.
The team's triumph is their first against a top-12 opponent since 2023, while it clinches the unit's first six-match winning streak and their first 6-2 start since 2018.
The RiverHawks take the court Tuesday at 1 p.m. against Arkansas Tech to cap off the homestand.
