FORT SMITH, Ark. -- Northeastern State opened Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with a 6-1 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday at The Hangout.
The RiverHawks improved to 8-4 overall and 1-0 in MIAA action while extending their winning streak over the Lions to nine consecutive matches.
NSU secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
Daisy Barrow and
Renata Morales earned a 6-4 victory at the top spot, while
Carla Alvarez Perez and
Laura Mertens picked up a win by walkover at No. 3.
In singles play, Northeastern State claimed five of six matches. Barrow (No. 2),
Sofia Kotliarova (No. 3) and Mertens (No. 4) each won in straight sets, while
Lucia Bontempo added a point by walkover at No. 6.
Alvarez Perez extended her singles winning streak to five matches with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 5.
Northeastern State returns to action April 1, traveling to face Rockhurst.
