TAHLEQUAH -- Northeastern State saw an early back-and-forth contest slip away after Arkansas-Fort Smith erupted for 15 runs in the fifth inning, handing the RiverHawks a 21-9 loss on Tuesday in MIAA play.
The RiverHawks (13-28, 8-18 MIAA) matched the Lions through the first four innings, erasing deficits and eventually tying the game at 6-6 midway through the contest. Northeastern State collected 13 hits on the day and showed consistent production throughout the lineup.
Gunner Lakins provided the biggest spark, launching two home runs — one in the fourth inning and another in the seventh — to lead the RiverHawks offensively. He finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Xavier Sanchez added two hits and drove in a run, while
Jake Woodring contributed a pair of RBI.
Klete Finley also had a strong day at the plate with two hits and scored twice.
The game turned decisively in the bottom of the fifth, when Arkansas-Fort Smith sent 19 batters to the plate and scored 15 runs on 10 hits to break open a 6-6 tie.
Kael Smith (0-1) was charged with the loss in relief for Northeastern State.
The RiverHawks will look to rebound as they travel to Northwest Missouri State this Friday for their next MIAA series.
