Sergio Espinal
continues to build
Northeastern State's Baseball Program.
Espinal begins his ninth season as head coach of the RiverHawks and expectations are growing for his club to succeed. After seven seasons, Espinal has led NSU to a record of 206-216, but he won't be satisfied until Northeastern State is a contender annually in the Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II baseball ranks.
Espinal is no stranger to NCAA Tournament experiences. During his collegiate career at Oklahoma State University, he was a member of the Cowboys' squad that qualified for four consecutive College World Series appearances. He also had a brief stint in the Chicago Cubs minor league organization as a player and holds strong ties to his collegiate teammates Robin Ventura and Pete Incaviligia. These experiences carry over onto the diamond with Espinal's NSU clubs.
The veteran coach has a multitude of coaching experience at the NCAA Division II as well. Prior to being named to his position at NSU, Espinal spent eight years at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., where he made the Blue Tigers into a fierce competitor n the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Espinal received his bachelor's degree from the University of North Texas and later earned his master's degree from North Alabama where he served as a graduate assistant baseball coach.
A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association, Espinal has served on the NCAA All-America Selection Committee and is president of the LSC Baseball Coaches. He and his wife, Dana, have two children, Brandon and Crystal.
