TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The Northeastern State women's soccer team defeated Southwest Baptist 2-1 in overtime Friday night at DeLoache Field.
The RiverHawks (11-2-0, 5-2-0 MIAA) stayed near the top of the league table by winning their sixth-straight match, while the Bearcats (7-5-1, 3-4-0 MIAA) saw their recent two-match win streak halted.
Sophomore forward
Lindsey Latta put the home side on top in the 10th minute of action after receiving a breakaway pass along the left side from senior midfielder
Elizabeth Cudjoe. Latta's shot was fired low far post from the left wing.
SBU was able to equalize in the 31st minute when Karla Jamison dribbled through the NSU defense and put an end to Northeastern's State recent 443-minute shutout streak that lasted over the course of six matches.
Both teams entered into overtime after playing the remaining 59 scoreless minutes in the first half.
Northeastern State saw a chance to score in the 94th minute when senior midfielder
Renee' Valcarcel's initial shot from the right wing was saved by SBU goalkeeper Paige Hemphill, but Cudjoe was right in front of goal to clean up the rebound and send the RiverHawks to victory.
Cudjoe's golden goal proved to be her third game-winning goal of the season.
Northeastern State outshot Southwest Baptist 24-16 and also had the advantage in corner kicks 6-4.
Freshman goalkeeper
Jordan Woodruff (11-2) saw 94 minutes of play and allowed one goal and made eight saves.
The RiverHawks will be on the road for their next match scheduled at 1 p.m. Oct. 20 against No.24-ranked Central Missouri at the Jennies Field in Warrensburg, Mo.
