TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team defeated MIAA foe Washburn 2-0 Sunday afternoon at DeLoache Field to close out the regular season.
The RiverHawks (15-3-0, 8-3-0 MIAA) clinched the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Championship, while the Ichabods (9-8-1, 6-4-1 MIAA) finished fourth in the regular-season standings.
With the victory and a subsequent draw in Edmond, Okla., between Emporia State and Central Oklahoma, NSU will host No. 7 seed ESU at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 in the MIAA quarterfinals.
Both teams remained scoreless in the first half after relentless back and forth efforts to net a goal.
In the 54th minute, senior
Emily Voges knocked in a header from sophomore midfielder
McKenzie Musella on a corner kick to put NSU up 1-0. The marker for Voges was the first of the season.
After many touches on the top of the box senior
Renee' Valcarcel dribbled up from the left side of the field and struck a ball that found the back of the net in the 78th minute to improve the
RiverHawks score to 2-0.
The NSU defense held firm and was able to complete the clean sheet. Voges tabbed the game-winning goal while Valcarcel scored her sixth goal of the season.
The RiverHawks outshot the Ichabods 14-12 and had the advantage in corner kicks 5-4.
Freshman goalkeeper
Jordan Woodruff (15-3) saw 90 minutes of play and made four saves. She recorded her school-record 10th shutout of the season and now has the school mark for career clean sheets.
"The first half I felt was pretty even. Both teams had some pretty good punches; neither team could really put one away," NSU Coach
Chase Wooten said. "Jordan made a big save about midway through on the first half on a low rise ball and led to a corner but we survived the moment.
"We had better chances in the second half, but Washburn was still dangerous. On the corner, we haven't been that dangerous but it was nice to see Voges get one, especially on the last regular season game. And then Renee' had already hit the post once and is just a dangerous player and made the second goal, while really outworking people she got a chance to finish it out."
Northeastern State now has a school-record 11 shutouts this season and maintained its lead in the MIAA in fewest goals allowed (11). The 15 victories are also a new school record.
