Northeastern State Splits on Day One of Courtyard by Marriott Invitational

WICHITA FALLS, Texas- The Northeastern State softball team lost the morning contest and won the afternoon game on Day One of the Courtyard by Marriott Invitational Friday at Midwestern State's Mustangs Park.

NSU (6-4) fell to St. Mary's (16-7) and then defeated Oklahoma Panhandle State (2-15).

St. Mary's posted two runs in the bottom of the second inning to lead Northeastern State 2-0. NSU took the lead at the top of the fifth frame on a sacrifice fly to right field from junior Navada Campos scoring freshman Saharra Henson. Senior Lisa Ripperger then doubled down the middle to score junior Megan Robison and junior Amanda Harjo to end the home half of the fifth inning 3-2. The Rattlers reclaimed the lead on a homerun to left field from Vianna Gutierrez, who scored in Taylor Vidrine in the bottom of the fifth frame to ultimately grasp the win 4-3 over NSU after seven innings.

Ripperger led the RiverHawks with two RBI and Campos added one RBI.

Freshman Kayce Wooldridge (2-2) suffered the loss in the circle after throwing six innings. Wooldridge only allowed five runs and four hits.

NSU recorded the first three runs of the game in the top of the third inning. Robinson flied out to center field to score senior Cayce Coleman. Campos doubled to center to bring in Harjo and Henson to end the home half of the inning 3-0. Northeastern State then scored two in the fourth frame and one in the fifth inning to lead OPSU 6-0. The Aggies only run came in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI ending the frame 6-1. The RiverHawks blasted another four runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure the win 10-1 over OBSU.

Campos led the RiverHawks in RBI with three followed by Harjo, Henson, and Coleman with two each. Senior Kelsi Hilderbrandt was three for four at the plate, scoring two runs and one RBI.

Coleman (2-2) notched the win and threw the full seven inning contest. She allowed three hits and one run.

NSU will continue play Saturday at Mustangs Park  against Oklahoma Panhandle State at 9 a.m. and Midwestern State at 1 p.m.
