Campos, Henson Lead the RiverHawks in Split Over Lions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JOPLIN, Mo. – The Northeastern State softball team split a doubleheader against Missouri Southern State Saturday afternoon at Lea Kungle Field.

NSU (9-15, 1-3) dropped game one to MSSU (13-9, 2-2) 7-2 and won the twilight contest 5-1.

Missouri Southern State scored three runs off two hits in the home half of the first inning to lead Northeastern State 3-0.

The Lions scored three more runs late in the third frame on a triple from Brooklyn Farrell and a single from Kathryn Goins to lead 6-0. MSSU added its final run in the fourth inning on a single to right field to improve the lead to 7-0 over NSU.

The RiverHawks, with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and no runners on base, got freshman Saharra Henson to first base after being walked by the pitcher. Junior Madison Reed singled to right field to stand up two runners on base for junior Amanda Harjo. Harjo singled to bring in Henson and Reed and put two runs up for NSU. MSSU held Northeastern State for the
remainder of the contest and took game one 7-2.

MSSU held NSU to seven hits and two runs. Harjo led NSU with two runs batted in and one hit.

Freshman Kayce Wooldridge (3-8) tossed for a full six frames and took the loss in the circle. She allowed 13 hits and seven earned runs.

Northeastern State's leadoff batter Henson took first base after being hit by pitch in the top of the first frame. She went on to score the first run for NSU on a single from senior Lisa Ripperger.

The RiverHawks scored junior Navada Campos on a leadoff home run in the top of the second inning to lead the Lions 2-0. Henson scored again in the visitors half of the fourth frame to improve NSU's lead 3-0.

Ripperger scored in the top of the fifth inning on a single from Campos. Campos scored after Henson reached on a fielder's choice to secure the lead for the RiverHawks 5-0.

MSSU scored one run late in the home half of the seventh frame but the RiverHawks defense proved to be too much as NSU took game two 5-1.

Campos led NSU with two runs, two hits and two RBI. She also hit her sixth homerun of the season. Henson also had two runs, two hits and two runs batted in.

Sophomore Shelby Enloe (2-1) tabbed the win in the circle. She tossed a full seven-inning contest, allowing only eight hits and one earned run.

Northeastern State will see a week off from play. The RiverHawks will visit Kearney, Neb. on March 23 and face off against MIAA foe University of Nebraska at Kearney.
