Northeastern State Splits with Truman State

Bulldogs capture opening game 11-8, RiverHawks post 9-0 run-rule in nightcap

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Northeastern State softball team split a pair of MIAA contests with Truman State Friday afternoon at the Truman Softball Park.
 
The Bulldogs (22-14, 10-10 MIAA) won the first game 11-8, and the RiverHawks (22-20, 12-8 MIAA) earned a 9-0 run-rule victory in the second contest.
 
NSU will now travel to St. Charles, Mo., for a two-game set with Lindenwood. First pitch will be 1 p.m. April 20.

Truman State lit up the plate early in the home half of the first inning, scoring five runs. The RiverHawks were quickly sat down in order in the second frame, while the Bulldogs had a similar half.
 
NSU plated two runs in the third inning but TSU still kept the lead at 5-2. Senior Lindsea Ross scored after junior Amanda Harjo reached on a fielder's choice. Ross reached base on a walk to lead off the frame. Junior Madison Reed added the second run for NSU after senior Kelsi Hilderbrandt reached on a throwing error by the TSU third baseman. Reed reached base on a single to the shortstop.
 
Truman State improved its lead by two in the bottom of the second inning to move into the fourth frame leading 7-2. The RiverHawks turned their bats to tie the Bulldogs 7-7 in the fourth inning. Back-to-back homeruns from freshman Saharra Henson and Harjo blasted in junior Allyson Pogue, Ross and Reed.  TSU answered back with another three runs to pull ahead and end the fourth 10-7.
 
The Bulldogs added one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning to improve 11-7. The RiverHawks tried to outmatch TSU by scoring in Pogue on a single to right center from Harjo, however they could not secure the lead. Truman State took game one 11-8.
Harjo led Northeastern State with four RBI and went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Reed was 3-for-4.
 
Senior Cayce Coleman (6-6) took the loss in the circle after throwing the first four frames. She allowed nine hits and 10 runs. Sophomore Shelby Enloe threw the remaining two innings and allowed two hits and one run.

Freshman Kayce Wooldridge threw a one-hit shutout and the NSU bats heated up as the RiverHawks posted a run-rule victory. Wooldridge (8-10) struck out three and did not walk a Bulldog in a complete-game effort.
 
The score remained 0-0 threw the first two innings, but the visitors got on the board with a single run in the third. NSU then exploded for eight runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the split.
 
Harjo was 3-for-4 with five runs batted in. Reed was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior Navada Campos hit her team-leading 10th home run of the season, and she finished 2-for-2 at the plate.
