OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Northeastern State softball team lost 6-1 to Emporia State University in the opening round of the 2013 MIAA Softball Championship Friday afternoon at the Blue Valley Recreation Complex.

The No. 5-seeded RiverHawks (26-23) are now in the loser's bracket and will face No. 8 seed Northwest Missouri State at 11 a.m. May 4. The game was originally slated for 4 p.m. today, but the second wave of games were called off due to a sub-40 wind chill and a persistent rainfall.

Northeastern State started the scoring in the top of the second, when a double from senior Cayce Coleman plated junior Allyson Pogue. That would prove to be the lone run for the RiverHawks, however. NSU loaded the bases in the top of the first with no outs, but the threat was halted as the next three batters all struck out swinging.

Emporia State (34-16), the tournament's No. 4 seed, took the lead with three tallies in the home half of the second, and the Hornets added three insurance runs in the bottom of the third. The score would remain 6-1 the rest of the way.

Coleman finished 2-for-4, and junior Amanda Harjo was 2-for-2 at the plate. Junior Madison Reed recorded the other NSU hit.

Freshman Kayce Wooldridge (10-12) took the loss in the circle after allowing six runs (three earned) on 12 hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out two in the complete-game effort.

Taylor Reichard and Katie Huffman led ESU at the plate. They were both 3-for-3 and combined to score three runs. Huffman drove home two.

Karley Schmelzer (27-7) tossed a complete game and allowed one run on five hits. She struck out 11 and walked just two.

Northeastern State is making its first postseason appearance since 2007, when the school was a member of the Lone Star Conference.
