LIBERTY, Mo. – The No. 14-ranked Northeastern State men's soccer team opened 2013 with a 4-0 victory over William Jewell College Friday afternoon at Greene Stadium.

The RiverHawks (1-0) used goals from four different members of the team and a strong defensive performance to secure the first win of the new campaign.
Â
"It was tough in the early going because both teams came out and played really hard," NSU coach
Rob Czlonka said. "William Jewell is a great defensive team. We were fortunate to get some runs behind their back line, and we made them count."
Â
Junior forward
Jordan Schmoker posted the game-winning goal in the 34th minute off an assist from junior midfielder
Josue Morales. Schmoker assisted on the second goal of the match, which was a 58th-minute tally from senior midfielder
Juan Gonzalez.
Â
Sophomore forward
Paul Samia added an insurance marker in the 71st minute with help from sophomore midfielder
Frank Garay and freshman forward
Jonathan Guzman. Freshman forward
Roberto Soares put away his first-career goal in the 89th minute to cap the contest.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Eric Shephard (1-0) registered his first-career clean sheet. He made one save and played the full 90.
Â
"Shephard played a very good game. He kept everything very simple and he communicated well," Czlonka said. "Overall, our guys stayed focused defensively. We saw glimpses today of what we can be in the long term."
Â
The RiverHawks outshot William Jewell 7-4, with six of NSU's shots going on frame. The road side also attempted one more corner kick, 3-2.
Â
WJC's (0-1) Quentin Souder led the Cardinals with two shots. Shane Van Hooser (0-1) made two saves in net and allowed four goals.
Â
Northeastern State will now set out on a treacherous three-game road voyage that will see the green and white do battle with No. 6 Rockhurst (1 p.m., Sept. 8) No. 5 Regis (5 p.m., Sept. 13) and No. 19 Colorado Mines (Noon, Sept. 15).
Â
"We are looking forward to this trip, and we're excited about the opportunity to see where we match up with some of the best teams in the country," Czlonka said. "We are going up against some of the nation's powerhouse programs. This will be a good test to help prepare us for conference play and get us ready for a potential postseason run."
