TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team lost to Emporia State 1-0 Friday evening at DeLoache Field.

Amelie Heun put the visitors on the scoreboard early. A free kick in the 10th minute of play bounced in the six-yard box, and Heun was able to poke it across the line.

The teams would play out the rest of the game with no goals despite a late slew of chances for the RiverHawks. Northeastern State came close in the 88th minute when. A shot from the top of the box by sophomore forward Anastasia Robinson caromed off the left post and went through the goal mouth before being cleared on the right side.

The RiverHawks (5-4) fell to 2-3 in MIAA play while the Hornets (4-2-3, 1-1-3 MIAA) earned their first conference victory.

NSU outshot Emporia State 12-10 and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Woodruff fell to 5-4 on the season. She played all 90 minutes and had four saves, while allowing the lone goal.

Northeastern State will stay at home to take on Washburn at 1 p.m. Oct. 5 at DeLoache Field.

Statement...
"I thought at times in the game we looked really good. We are struggling to connect, and that leads to missed opportunities. We take too many shots that are never dangerous and just lead to goal kicks for the other team. If we could combine one extra pass, we could keep teams more honest. Defensively, I thought we battled hard. We've done that pretty much every game this season. We just need to start putting away our chances. We're struggling to complete those chances because of an errant idea or an errant pass. There were moments where we looked really good, but we're giving up free kicks at midfield that lead to long services in. That's how Emporia State was able to get their goal. They got the goal on a scrum in the box after a free kick, and that's just how it goes sometimes. I wouldn't say I'm disappointed with their effort, I'm just frustrated with the result and that we can't do a little better to yield some goals."
