STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Northeastern State softball team split a pair of contests Sunday at the TSU Softball Complex.
The RiverHawks met up with Northwestern Oklahoma State for the first game of the day and fell 4-2. NSU (1-2) then registered its first win of the young season with an 8-6 victory over Southern Nazarene.
Northwestern Oklahoma State 4, Northeastern State 2
The Rangers scored in the top of the second inning after a single to center field scored a base runner for NWOSU to lead NSU 1-0. Northwestern struck again in the top of the third inning after a homerun slug sent in two to score and improve NWOSU's lead to 3-0.
Northeastern State grabbed at the chance to take the lead over the Rangers after scoring in senior
Madison Reed on a passed ball in the bottom of the third to put one run in for the RiverHawks and end the inning down 3-1.
NSU continued to turn bats in the fourth inning as senior
Allyson Pogue singled to left field. She advanced to third after two ground outs and then scored on a Reed double to cut Northwestern's lead to 3-2. The Rangers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, however, and they were able to hold on for the victory.
Sophomore
Alex Files threw all seven innings and took the loss in the circle. She allowed four runs and nine hits.
Northeastern State 8, Southern Nazarene 6
SNU plated four runs in the bottom of the first frame and one in the bottom of the third to lead NSU 5-0.
Reed singled to left field in the top of the fourth to get on base in time for sophomore
Saharra Henson to pummel a homerun to left field and put NSU on the scoreboard behind SNU 5-2.
The Crimson Storm added one more run to lead NSU 6-2 moving into the sixth inning.
The RiverHawk bats came alive in the sixth, however, as the green and white plated six runs in the top half of the frame. Freshman
Lauren Flanary led off with a base hit to right center. Reed singled to second base and Henson walked to load the bases for freshman
Madison Boyd, who singled to center to score freshman
Ryan Martin, who entered the game to pinch run for Flanary.
Junior
Alyssa Aguilar singled to center field to plate Reed and Henson and put NSU behind by just one at 6-5. Pogue poked one to center field and advanced to second on a throw to score Aguilar and Boyd to gain the lead for the RiverHawks 7-6. NSU sealed the lead after Pogue scored on a double from senior
Megan Robison to improve the lead and win the game 8-6.
Senior
Kylee Cole (1-0) tabbed her first career victory after throwing the final four innings. She allowed two hits and one unearned run. Cole relieved junior
Laura Fleck, who pitched the opening two innings. Fleck allowed five runs and seven hits.
"
Kylee Cole came in and relieved Fleck and did a tremendous job for us," NSU coach
Clay Davis said. "She gave up two hits and one unearned run. She came in and competed and kept us in the ball game."
"We came into the sixth inning at the top of the batting order and had some good base hits.
Madison Reed had a great weekend and was a big catalyst for our offense. We turned bats pretty well and that led to Aguilar scoring the game-winning run."
Henson and Reed were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
The RiverHawks were scheduled to play a pair of contests Monday at Tarleton State but those games have been cancelled due to poor weather moving into the Stephenville area. NSU will now be on the road for the Midwestern Tournament in Wichita Falls, Texas, on February 14 and will play Cameron at Mustangs Park.
