Softball Sweeps Saturday for 8th Straight Victory

Files, Wooldridge toss complete games, Henson, Aguilar both hit home runs

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State softball team defeated both Bethany College and William Woods Saturday at RiverHawks Park.

NSU (10-6) opened the day with a 12-4 victory over Bethany (4-10) and edged past William Woods (7-6) 5-4 to improve its win streak to eight games.

The Swedes took the early lead with a run in the top of the first frame. The RiverHawks picked up five runs to pull past BC 5-1 and they never looked back. NSU turned bats and scored the first two runs off of a single to center field from freshman Madison Boyd, which plated sophomore Saharra Henson and senior Madison Reed. Senior Allyson Pogue plated the next two runs after a triple shot to right center to score junior Alyssa Aguilar and Boyd. The final run of the inning came in after senior Megan Robison singled to shortstop to score Pogue.

Bethany scored two in the top of the second frame to cut the lead in half, but NSU was able to plate Henson in the bottom of the third to take a 6-3 lead.

The Swedes offense added another run in the top of the third frame, but that would prove to be their last of the game.

NSU plated two runs in the fourth frame and four in the fifth frame to run-rule Bethany College with a 12-4 victory.

Henson finished 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. Reed and Aguilar each posted two hits and two runs while Boyd and Pogue each added two RBI.

Sophomore Alex Files (2-1) threw a complete game and tabbed the win in the circle. She allowed eight hits and four runs (two earned).

William Woods brought home two runs in the top of the first frame to lead NSU 2-0 until the top of the third when the visitors plated two more to improve the lead to 4-0 over the RiverHawks.

Northeastern State's offense answered back in the home half of the third inning with a game-tying four runs. The first run of the game for NSU was scored by freshman Krysti Cearley after

Henson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Cearley reached base on a single to center. Boyd singled to left field to bring in Reed and freshman Lauren Flanary, and Henson scored the final run on a sacrifice fly by Aguilar.

The battle for the tiebreaker ended in the bottom of the fifth inning when NSU scored Boyd on a single from Pogue up the middle. Boyd reached base after an error made by third base. The RiverHawks jumped ahead of the Owls 5-4 and would maintain the lead to secure the victory after seven frames.

Flanary recored three hits and one run for NSU while Boyd made two RBI.

RiverHawks' hurler, sophomore Kayce Wooldridge (4-2), notched the win in the circle after throwing a complete game. She allowed only five hits and four runs (two earned), which all came in the first two innings. She also struck out eight and only walked one.

NSU will be on the road for its next doubleheader against Arkansas Tech slated for March 4 at 3 p.m. in Russellville, Ark. at Chartwells Complex.
