Big Inning Helps RiverHawks Split with Hillcats

RSU defeats NSU 8-2 in game one; NSU wins game two 5-4

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Northeastern State softball team split a doubleheader with Rogers State on Tuesday Night at the Hillcat Softball Field.

The RiverHawks (22-12) fell to the Hillcats (10-21) 8-2 in the first game but then went on to defeat RSU 5-4 in the nightcap.

The Hillcats struck first in the opening game of the doubleheader with a three-run third inning. Northeastern State plated two runs in the top of the sixth frame on a home run over the center field wall by sophomore Saharra Henson. Senior Madison Reed also scored after reaching base on a fielding error by the third baseman.

The home run proved to be NSU's only power move of the game as the Hillcats scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Northeastern State 8-2 in seven innings.

Henson recorded NSU's lone hit of the game. This marked the fourth time in the last six games that the RiverHawks finished with three hits or less.

Senior Shelbie Wagnon (2-2) suffered the loss in the circle after throwing 5.1 frames. She allowed seven hits and seven runs. Sophomore Alex Files came in for relief and recorded the final two outs. She gave up three hits and one run.

Rogers State's Makenzie Kirk reached base in the home half of the second inning to score in Carley Conley to put RSU on the board with one. Kirk then would score the second run of the frame on a double down the left field line to improve the Hillcats score to 2-0.

Northeastern State answered back with its biggest inning in eight games. The RiverHawks plated five runs in the top of the third frame to take the lead over RSU 5-2. Junior Alyssa Aguilar singled up the middle to score Henson and senior Allyson Pogue. Henson reached base on a single through the left side and Pogue reached on a single up the middle. Freshman Madison Boyd scored on a wild pitch followed by a big home run shot to left center by senior Megan Robison to score Aguilar.

The Hillcats scored one run in the bottom of the fifth and one run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 5-4, but the RiverHawks five-run frame proved to be enough to ensure the win 5-4 over Rogers State.

Robison led the RiverHawks with four hits and two RBI. Senior Navada Campos added two hits, while Aguilar tabbed two RBI.

Sophomore Kayce Wooldridge (11-6) took the win in the circle after throwing a complete game. She allowed nine hits and four runs.

NSU amassed 12 hits, which was the third-highest total recorded in a game this season and the highest total recorded in the past 19 games. The victory for Northeastern State was also the first true road win of the season.

The RiverHawks will be back in action against Central Missouri with a doubleheader set to begin at 4 p.m. on March 28 at the Jennies Softball Field at the South Recreation Complex in Warrensburg, Mo.
