OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Northeastern State softball team saw its historic run end in the finals of the 2014 MIAA Championship. The RiverHawks lost 12-0 to Missouri Western State University Saturday afternoon at the Blue Valley Sports Complex.

NSU (29-30), the No. 8 seed in the championship, advanced to the finals of a conference tournament for the first time in school history. The RiverHawks also posted the most victories in a single season since 2007.

Northeastern State competed in the MIAA Championship tournament a season ago, and this is the first time NSU has made back-to-back postseason appearances since 2000-01.

The RiverHawks became the first No. 8 seed in at least the last 14 years (MIAA record books only go back to 2000) to post a 2-0 mark on the first day of the tournament and to advance to the finals of the event.

In the finals, the Griffons (38-16) scored two in the second, three in the fifth and seven in the seventh to claim the MIAA championship. Northeastern State was only able to register one hit in the contest, which was tallied by sophomore Saharra Henson.

Sophomore Kayce Wooldridge (17-14) threw the first 6.0 innings in the circle. She dominated play in the first four games of the tournament, but MWSU was able to score six runs (four earned) on eight hits against her in the finals. Senior Kylee Cole and sophomore Alex Files both pitched in the final frame.

Jackie Bishop (25-8) earned the win for the Griffons. She struck out 10 and conceded just one hit and one walk in 7.0 frames.

Kat Steponovich, Michelle Stevenson and Morgan Rathmann all had two hits for the champs. Kailey Green went 1-for-1 with three RBI, and Rathmann also had three RBI and two runs scored.
