Softball heads to Arkansas for nonconference action

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State softball team is set to play a midweek nonconference doubleheader against Arkansas Tech. The RiverHawks (12-14, 4-6 MIAA) will travel to Russellville, Arkansas, to take on the Golden Suns (18-6, 9-3 GAC) in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. March 25 at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex.  

Northeastern State is 4-2 in its last six games, sweeping doubleheaders against Lindenwood and Lincoln before falling twice to Washburn. Madison Boyd leads the way for the RiverHawks in batting average. The sophomore is hitting .396 (36-for-91) on the season with 21 RBI. Redshirt freshman Paige Gann (.370, 30-81) leads the team in home runs (7) and is second on the squad in RBI (22). Senior Alli Eales is batting .376 (32-for-85) and leads the RiverHawks in RBI (24) and is second on the team in home runs (6). Junior Laura Fleck (2-2) has a 3.80 ERA with one save. She has struck out 27 in 38.2 innings of work. Fellow junior Kayce Wooldridge (6-6) has a 4.67 ERA in the circle this year with seven complete games and one save. She has recorded 53 strikeouts in 75.0 innings pitched.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN SUNS                           
Arkansas Tech University is located in Russellville, Arkansas, and the team competes in the Great American Conference. The Golden Suns, picked eighth in the GAC Preseason Poll, are 18-6 in 2015 and have put up a 9-3 record in conference play. They are receiving votes in the most recent NFCA Division II Softball Poll and lead the nation in home runs per game (1.96). Arkansas Tech is 5-1 in its last six games, defeating Southern Arkansas four times and splitting with Arkansas-Monticello. Courtney Colunga has a .403 batting average (31-for-77) and has hit seven home runs. Shanna Davidson (.393, 24-for-61) and Ashley Savage (.338, 23-for-68) both have eight home runs on the season. Morgan Vaughan is 5-1 in the circle for Arkansas Tech with a 3.11 ERA. She has recorded 29 strikeouts in 47.1 IP with two complete games. Victoria Huie (7-2) has thrown five complete games with a 3.26 ERA. She has recorded 26 strikeouts in 49.1 innings pitched.
