Softball vies for MIAA tourney spot this weekend

NSU set to play Pittsburg State, Missouri Southern State in last MIAA matchups of 2015

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State softball team is set to play the final games of the regular season when it plays doubleheaders against Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern State.

The RiverHawks (19-28, 9-13 MIAA) will first meet Pittsburg State (30-16, 15-7 MIAA) in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. April 25 in Pittsburg, Kansas. NSU will then travel to Joplin, Missouri, to face Missouri Southern State University (12-34, 4-16 MIAA) in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. April 26.

Northeastern State is coming off a doubleheader sweep of then No. 17-ranked Emporia State. The RiverHawks currently sit in 10th place in the MIAA standings, while the Gorillas are in fourth and the Lions sit in 13th. The top eight qualify for the postseason tournament. NSU is 8-8 on the road, while PSU is 10-6 in Pittsburg and MSSU is 3-13 at home. 

NSU enters the final weekend with an outside shot of qualifying for the playoffs for a third-straight year. All of the following must occur for Northeastern State to earn the eighth and final seed into the MIAA Championship:

1. NSU must win its final four games.
2. Nebraska-Kearney must defeat Fort Hays State at least once on April 24.
3. Central Missouri must stay atop the MIAA standings.

Megan Ewton leads the way for the RiverHawks in batting average. The junior is hitting .346 (44-for-127) on the season. Redshirt freshman Paige Gann (.313, 45-for-144) leads the team in home runs (11). Seniors Alli Eales (.336, 51-for-152) and Alyssa Aguilar (.301, 37-for-123) have each hit nine home runs and recorded 32 RBI. Junior Kayce Wooldridge (11-11) has a 4.21 ERA this year with 13 complete games. She has recorded 84 strikeouts in 139.2 innings pitched. Senior Laura Fleck is 4-5 in the circle for the RiverHawks with a 4.95 ERA. She has struck out 51 in 76.1 innings with four complete games and one save.

SCOUTING THE GORILLAS                    
Pittsburg State University is located in Pittsburg, Kansas, and the team competes in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Gorillas, currently in fourth place in the MIAA standings, are 30-16 in 2015 and 15-7 in MIAA play. PSU most recently swept a nonconference doubleheader with Rogers State after losing doubleheaders against Central Missouri and Missouri Western. Cheslyn Mitchell leads the team with a .402 batting average (49-for-122). Nicole Nease (.345, 51-for-148) leads the squad with 14 home runs and 46 RBI. Kylie Guthier (.320, 47-for-147) has hit 10 home runs with 45 RBI. Emmie Robertson is 20-8 in the circle for the Gorillas, throwing 21 complete games with a 1.96 ERA. She has recorded 185 strikeouts in 175.1 innings pitched. Zoe Price (7-4) has a 3.16 ERA, striking out 64 in 73.0 IP with seven complete games.
 
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Missouri Southern State University is located in Joplin, Missouri, and the team competes in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Lions have put up a 12-34 overall record with a 4-16 conference record this year, and currently sit in 13th place in the MIAA standings. MSSU most recently lost two games to Central Missouri after splitting a nonconference doubleheader with Rogers State. Myranda Stewart leads the team with a .302 batting average (39-for-129) and 22 RBI. Kathryn Goins (.227, 32-for-141) leads the squad with six home runs. Ashley Lutz is 6-16 in the circle for the Lions with a 3.56 ERA. She has thrown 11 complete games with 93 strikeouts in 127.2 innings pitched. Kali' Hodson is 2-14 with a 5.12 ERA. She has recorded 51 strikeouts with six games in 93.0 IP.
