RiverHawks set for MIAA Championship

Fifth-seeded Northeastern State will meet Pittsburg State in tourney’s opening round

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State softball team is set to compete in the 2016 MIAA Championship. The event is being held April 28-30 at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

The RiverHawks (32-21, 15-11 MIAA) have earned the No. 5 seed in the double-elimination tournament and will meet No. 4 seed Pittsburg State (36-17, 19-7 MIAA) in the first round at 5 p.m. April 28 on Field 2. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Children age six and under are free.

The winner of the first game will meet either No. 1 Missouri Western State or No. 8 Southwest Baptist following the conclusion of the opening-round games. The two losing teams will also meet in the first round of the loser's bracket.

NSU and PSU split a doubleheader in Tahlequah in the final week of the regular season on April 22. Pittsburg State won the first contest 2-1 and Northeastern State defeated the Gorillas 10-3 in the second game.

PSU utilized reigning MIAA Pitcher of the Year Emmie Robertson in the first game and the RiverHawks struck out a season-high 15 times. She also tossed a no-hitter and entered the sixth inning with a perfect game.

Northeastern State is making its third appearance at the MIAA Championship in the last four years. The RiverHawks are an even 4-4 at the tournament, which included advancing to the finals in 2014 as the No. 8 seed. They went 1-2 in 2013 as the No. 5 seed. This will be the first time NSU and Pittsburg State will meet in the conference championship.
