NSU Notes

>> Sixth-year senior Ashton Antwine is a nominee for the 2019 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year (click here for story).

>> The clock is turned back to 1994 with NSU honoring its 25th anniversary of its NAIA National Championship at halftime. Northeastern State went 11-2 that season and was Co-Champions in the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference (OIC).  The team was inducted into the 2015 NSU Hall of Fame Class, along with eight All-Americans and ten that were named All-OIC. Tony Hutson and Todd Yearman, members of that team, went on to play in the NFL.

>> Northeastern State is fifth in the nation in fewest penalties (20) and leads the MIAA in fewest penalty yards per game (32.7), which is also sixth-best nationally.

>> Jacob Medrano has started the last two games as NSU's quarterback and has gone 38-for-69 in completions and has tossed two touchdown passes.

>> Brady Ellsworth has kicked a field goal in the last three games. The sophomore is 3-for-4 this season and has kicked a season-long 39-yard field goal.

>> Ty Nichols leads the MIAA in passes defended and is second nationally with ten this season. The sophomore is fourth on the NSU roster with 30 total tackles and has one forced fumble. Nichols needs six more to crack into NSU's single-season record book and nine to match the program best (Jameel Jones, 1996). Against Missouri Western, he had four defended passes, which is tied for second-most in a game this season in the MIAA and tied for ninth nationally.

>> Courtland Clark is the first NSU football player to have a pair of fumble recoveries in a game since 2015, and he had an interception against Missouri Western.

>> Jahmel Bodrick played basketball for the RiverHawks last season and played in 28 contests while making four starts.

>> Redshirt quarterback Cayden Aldridge is a two-way player and will play for the NSU baseball program in the spring. Aldridge played quarterback for Tahlequah High School and was signed to play baseball at Oklahoma.

>> Ukoh Essang and Damani Carter will play their final playing season at graduates. There are 117 players from 32 schools in Division II who are graduates playing this season.

>> NSU will be sporting gray uniforms twice this season on the road. The uniform set will make their debut at Lincoln on Oct. 19 and will see the field against at Central Oklahoma on Nov. 9.

>> What dose BTC mean on the front of the NSU football helmets? Be the Change. The tag is on the back of the main fountain at the entrance to Northeastern State.

>> Three Northeastern State coaches have won a national championship as a player or as a staff member. Tom Howe (University of Duluth) and Michael Conrad (Texas A&M-Commerce) both won NCAA Division II National Titles, and Head Coach J.J. Eckert was a member of the 1994 NAIA Championship at NSU.

>> NSU has two graduate assistants with Big 12 playing experience. Darius Curry was a four-year letter winner at Oklahoma State, and Brady Foltz played four-years at TCU.

About the Ichabods

>> Washburn at 1-4 is off to its worst start since the 2002 season, where they opened the year 0-5. Since their last meeting with the RiverHawks, the Ichabods have gone 2-7 overall.

>> The Ichabods are rotating the No. 17 jersey this season to honor Dwane Simmons, a senior cornerback who passed away on April 28, 2019. James Letcher, Jr., who usually wears No. 13, will have Simmons' number in Tahlequah. Letcher is third in the nation in all-purpose yards (191) and has been a primary receiving target with 313 reception yards. He is also someone teams should avoid kicking to and averages 29.5-yards per return. Letcher does have one touchdown on a 100-yard return against Fort Hays State.

>> In week five, Washburn gave up 36 points in the first half to Missouri Western and fell 46-21 in Topeka.

>> Washburn has played three different quarterbacks this season and started two. Mitch Schurig started the first four contests, but Chaz Capps made his first start in a Washburn uniform last week and went 18-for-39 with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

>> Washburn is losing the turnover battle this season with ten interceptions and seven fumbles.
