DURANT, Okla. – Northeastern State took their first win under head baseball coach
Sunny Golloway in a 5-3 decision over Southeastern Oklahoma at Mike Metheny Field Tuesday evening.
The RiverHawks (1-4) surrendered the matchup's first run to the Savage Storm (3-1) after Damon Burroughs stole home at the bottom of the first, but NSU evened the game in the following inning off a sacrifice fly from
Braden Fryer to allow
Isaiah Keller to score.
After giving up the initial score to SE,
Christian Johnson kept the Savage Storm off the board for the next three innings and made it to the middle of the fifth before allowing a go-ahead RBI single, setting the stage for
Grant Parr to enter in relief and throw 1.1 scoreless with two strikeouts across his four retired batters on the day.
Parr's strong performance as the initial reliever was supplemented by a three-run burst of life from the NSU bats in the top of the sixth, where Keller and Fryer netted RBIs, in addition to
Duncan Key to give the RiverHawks a 4-2 favorable mark on the scoreboard.
The Savage Storm brought the difference to one in the seventh, but a
Matt Kaiser RBI double to bring home
Korben Ford in the top of the ninth accompanied by a runless eighth and ninth for the hosts iced the game in favor of the visitors.
Strong on both sides, the RiverHawks finished with ten hits from seven different players, along with 11 strikeouts across four different pitchers.
Austin Albright had two hits along with Keller and Ford. Johnson sent six SE batters packing on strikes in his second start at NSU, while
Grant Parr and
Trey Havens had two strikeouts each.
Cole White recorded his first save of the season by keeping a two-run difference intact in the closing stanza.
Northeastern State begins their first three-game series of the season as Southern Nazarene heads to Rousey Field on Friday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m.
