Late runs sink RiverHawks

EMPORIA, Kan. – Late innings doomed Northeastern State twice on Friday as they were swept at Emporia State.   The Hornets scored six unanswered runs to beat NSU 7-6 in the opener and four unanswered during the nightcap to win 8-7 in extras.

Northeastern State (5-16, 0-4 MIAA) had 21 hits against ESU (19-10, 3-3 MIAA) as the RiverHawks had their best offensive showing since Feb. 10 vs. Truman State.

The RiverHawks took a 6-1 lead into the fourth as Emporia State scored one run.  Errors plagued NSU in the fifth as they committed three in the frame allowing five batters to come home.

Emily Sampson had a three RBI game, with two coming on a double to left center. Madison Heinle scored two runs in the opening inning on a single up the middle.  The junior (5-6) allowed four earned runs to cross home plate in the loss.

In the nightcap, the RiverHawks carried a 7-4 lead into the home half of the sixth.  Emporia plated a run on a sac fly in the sixth before they got a two-out game-tying single in the bottom of the seventh.

The RiverHawks went down in order in the eighth before ESU manufactured a run on a leadoff walk for their first home sweep over Northeastern State since 2014.

Brynn Burchfield had three hits, and Macie Sawney had two.  Raegan Edwards assembled a three-RBI game, and Addy Wolfe plated a pair.

Korynn Tindel struck out two in her fifth career start.

The RiverHawks head to Washburn on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at noon.
