Softball drops two at Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. – Northeastern State fell twice on Saturday and was limited to one run at Washburn.  The Ichabods scored twice in the final two innings to overtake NSU 2-1 in the opener and later shut out NSU 3-0 in the nightcap.

The losses send NSU to 5-18 overall and 0-6 in MIAA play.

Northeastern State broke a scoreless game in the fifth with an RBI double to left center from Emily Sampson to score Allison Zanca in from second.  The lead would be shortlived for the RiverHawks, and Washburn pulled even in the bottom half of the inning on a solo shot to right center.

After the RiverHawks went down in order in the sixth, Washburn (23-9, 4-4 MIAA) got back-to-back hits with two outs to score the go-ahead run on a double.

Northeastern State was limited to four hits and struck out 12 times.  Madison Heinle (5-9) had a complete game and had three strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the RiverHawks had three hits, with Zanca having a pair of doubles.

Korynn Tindel (0-5) kept the Ichabods scoreless until the fifth where NSU's defense allowed two unearned runs to come home.  Washburn scored one more in the sixth off a one-out homer.  Tindel allowed just four hits and struck out three batters.

The RiverHawks return home on Friday where they will host Pittsburg State.
