Edwards' slam carries RiverHawks

WICHITA, Kan. – Raegan Edwards hit a grand slam to power the RiverHawks to a split Friday afternoon at Newman.  Newman took game one 8-1, with Northeastern State taking the nightcap 8-3.

In the opener, Allison Zanca homered to give the RiverHawks the early lead in the second.  The home run was the fourth of the season for the senior.  Newman poured in the runs in the bottom half on the frame getting seven base knocks and belting a three-run homer to give them a 7-1 lead.  Newman got their eighth run in the fourth inning as the RiverHawks were limited to four hits while striking out eight times.

Brynn Burchfield was the lone NSU player to reach base twice with a hit and a walk.

In the nightcap, Edwards broke the scoreless game in the fourth with her second homer of the season.  The senior had a five-RBI game which was a career-high and a season-best for the team.

Northeastern State scored runs in the final four innings and knocked out 14 hits on the Jets.  Emily Sampson had three for her tenth multi-hit game of the season.

Maddie Messenger, Edwards, Sampson, and Zanca had an extra-base hit.  Korynn Tindel (2-8) went six innings and struck out four batters in the win.

Newman (16–26, 4-12 MIAA)  was limited to five hits and struck out six times.

The RiverHawks (8-29, 3-17 MIAA) head next to Edmond for a doubleheader with Central Oklahoma starting at 2 p.m.
