BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Northeastern State took the field for their final Friday doubleheader of the season, taking two losses to Fort Hays State.
The early game saw the RiverHawks (8-35, 3-21 MIAA) get left off the board by the Tigers (26-22, 10-14 MIAA) in a 4-0 setback. Despite the shutout pitched by FHSU in the circle, the RiverHawks equaled the opposition's hit total with five.
Maddie Messenger recorded a two-hit performance in the defeat, while Korynn Tindel pitched her fifth complete game of the season and only allowed two earned runs.
NSU finished game two with an identical tally of five hits in a 3-2 loss to FHSU. After both sides were held off the board in the first four innings, the Tigers broke the ice, with a run scoring in the top of the fifth.
The RiverHawks responded, as an RBI in the sixth inning from Emily Sampson on a single and another in the same frame from Allison Zanca on a sacrifice fly gave the RiverHawks a one-run edge into the seventh, but the Tigers found a last gasp of playmaking to take the win, with the tying and go-ahead scores being accounted for before the third out of the top of the inning was accounted for.
Five different players had a base hit, while Madison Heinle matched Tindel with seven innings tossed.
Northeastern State plays their final doubleheader of the year tomorrow in Broken Arrow, Okla. vs. Nebraska-Kearney.
