Rolla, Mo. -- An opening half goal from Missouri S&T allowed the Miners (1-0) to defeat Northeastern State (0-1) in a 1-0 decision on Thursday night.
The RiverHawks were outshot in the first half 7-4, with goalkeeper
Gonzalo Castells getting in front of four of five on-goal strikes from the Miners. A 23rd-minute conversion from the hosts placed NSU in an early hole that carried into intermission. Despite a stellar defensive performance in the second half, where Missouri S&T was shut out amid a shot output was held to just three, the visitors failed to log an on-goal try to force the opposition into a precarious position in front of the net.
Luis Felipe Karam had two shots from the starting eleven, while
Ivan Lopez matched that total off the bench. The team's lone shot on goal came from
Carter Adams in his debut with the team. Castells recorded a save in the second half to take his total to five on the evening.
Northeastern State opens their nine-match home schedule with a non-conference battle against Drury on Monday, Sep. 9 at 7 pm.
