RiverHawks clinch series with 11-10 win in extras

TAHLEQUAH -- Stephen Osborne drove in seven runs to assist Northeastern State in a series-clinching 11-10 win after ten innings from Rousey Field on Sunday.

The RiverHawks (6-13, 2-6 MIAA) surrendered the first score to Newman (3-16, 1-8 MIAA) in the top of the first before Osborne answered with a grand slam, his first home run at NSU. The hosts would be held off the board for the next four innings, allowing the visitors a window to claim nine unanswered to take a 10-4 lead. The highlight of the scoring run saw the Jets plate seven in the top of the sixth before NSU formed an answer with a Carson Miller solo home run in the bottom of the inning. Klete Finley would give the RiverHawks their third home run of the afternoon with a solo shot in the seventh.

After holding Newman off the board in the final third of regulation, Northeastern State would once again find scoring opportunities in the bottom of the ninth. Entering from behind by four runs (10-6), the scoring began with a three-RBI double from Osborne. Trace Chamblee would pinch run for Osborne and score with two outs after a wild pitch to even the contest at 10 apiece. A Newman strikeout after would leave the game-winning run stranded to secure the first extra inning played at Rousey Field in 2026.

Izac Sizemore would enter and log a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless inning pitched. Klete Finley would draw a walk to open the bottom of the tenth before a Jaxon Gregory single advanced Finley to second. After an Alex Nirider flyout, Xavier Sanchez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chamblee followed and sent a ground ball to third base, allowing the Jets to claim a force out in that corner before an attempt at a double play to first was narrowly unsuccessful. Finley scored during the sequence to give the RiverHawks their first MIAA series win of the Kyle Williams era and their first extra innings victory at Rousey Field since Mar. 29, 2024.

Osborne's seven runs batted in marked the most for an NSU player in a single game since C.D. White had the same amount on Feb. 9, 2024. He was one of five NSU players to record two base hits in the win, while Izac Sizemore received winning credit after shutting down the Newman bats in the extra frame. Thomas Brownfield struck out five in his fifth start of the season, which lasted four innings. Notably, Xavier Sanchez was hit by a pitch on three occasions, making him the first NSU player to be hit three times in a single game since Gage Williams on Feb. 23, 2025 in a separate meeting against Newman.

The RiverHawks end the series with the Jets on Monday at 1 p.m. from Rousey Field.
