Northeastern State edged by Lincoln, 1-0

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Northeastern State was held to one shot on goal as No. 16 Lincoln (Mo.) scored in the second half to hand the RiverHawks a 1-0 loss Sunday at DeLoache Field.

Pedro Gomes scored the lone goal in the 65th minute, finishing a pass from Makwe Nkoana to give Lincoln the lead. The goal came at 64:44 and proved to be the difference.

Lincoln, ranked No. 16 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll, controlled much of the attack, outshooting Northeastern State 12-4 and putting six shots on goal. Victor Jaunay kept the RiverHawks within striking distance with five saves.

Northeastern State managed just four shots, with Avelino Rosa recording the team's lone shot on target. Lincoln goalkeeper Felipe Mattos made one save to preserve the shutout.

The RiverHawks had their best chance in the second half when Rosa's shot in the 73rd minute was saved by Mattos. Northeastern State also earned two corner kicks in the second half but could not find the equalizer.

The loss dropped Northeastern State to 0-2 on the season, while Lincoln improved to 1-0-1.

Northeastern State will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 2, when it hosts Drury at DeLoache Field.
