Biography

One word can sum up the coaching career of Northeastern State’s new offensive coordinator --- outstanding.

Charlie Cooper, a native of Grove, Okla. graduated from Northeastern State in 1964 and earned his master’s in 1970. Cooper played two seasons at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, where he was team captain and an All-Conference defensive end.  He then transferred for NSU where he was a member of the 1963 team that posted an undefeated 11-0 season and All-Sports Bowl championship. Cooper helped Northeastern State compile a 20-1 record during his two seasons.

His coaching career began at nearby Jay High School in 1964 where he led the Bulldogs to a conference title and three consecutive state playoff appearances in four seasons at the helm.

He moved to Joplin, Mo. to start the football program at Memorial High School.  After two years of building, the program tied or won for the Ozark Conference Championship in three of the next four years.

After a brief stint at Coffeyville Community College, Cooper returned to Jay High School for one season where he led the Bulldogs to the state quarterfinals.  He then moved to Grove High School where he served as head coach, athletic director and assistant principle.  The Ridgerunners advanced to the state playoffs in two of his four seasons at the helm.

In 1980 Cooper returned to Tahlequah to assume the roles of head football coach and athletic director. He succeeded in building the Tigers into powerhouse with nine state playoffs appearances, including a berth in the 1989 Class 4A title game. He averaged 10 victories per season over five straight years and led the Tigers to six district championships.

After 13 years at Tahlequah, Cooper moved to Rogers, Ark. where he instituted sophomore and junior varsity programs which increased student participation. The hard work paid off as the Mounties placed second in the 5A West and advanced to the state playoffs in 1994 and in 1997 reached qualified for the state semifinals.

Cooper retired from coaching in 2002. Cooper resides in Tahlequah with his wife Sue.
