TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 MIAA Championship with a 2-1 victory over Northwest Missouri State Tuesday night at DeLoache Field.
The No. 4-seeded RiverHawks (13-4-1, 7-4-1 MIAA) outshot the fifth-seeded Bearcats (8-7-3, 6-4-2 MIAA) and received goals from sophomore midfielder
Elizabeth Cudjoe and freshman forward
Lindsey Latta.
Top seed and No. 12-ranked Central Missouri survived a scare from No. 8 seed Southwest Baptist, and the Jennies will play host to the RiverHawks in the semifinals Nov. 2 in Warrensburg, Mo.
The Bearcats controlled the majority of possession in the early going, but it was Cudjoe who put the home side on the board first.
She received a pass from Latta inside the 18-yard penalty area in the 20th minute and used her space to chip the charging keeper. The ball calmly went into the back of the net and put the RiverHawks on the board. Senior midfielder
Hisa Turner sent the initial pass to Latta and was credited with the second assist.
NSU would add to its lead a little more than a minute later, but this time it was Cudjoe setting up Latta. Cudjoe found Latta free straight on just inside the 18, and Latta's strike sailed high past the keeper and into the goal.
Both players notched their seventh goals of the season.
Elizabeth Walde negated the clean sheet in the 57th minute, but it would not matter as NSU staved off a ferocious Bearcat attack in the final minutes to earn the victory and advance in the championship.
Junior goalkeeper
Maggie Kloza (9-3-1) earned the win after saving five shots and allowing just the one goal in the full 90 minutes. Kelsey Adams (6-6-2) had eight saves for NWMSU and took the loss after allowing the two NSU tallies.
