TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State men's basketball team opened up the 2012-13 campaign with a 78-73 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State University Monday night at Jack Dobbins Field House.

Five different RiverHawks (1-0) scored in double figures, led by a game-high 20 points from senior guard Ethan Anderson on 7-of-12 shooting. He also knocked down 4 of 7 three-point attempts.

NSU shot 48 percent from the field, 90 percent from the free-throw line and converted 11 of 24 (46 percent) three-point attempts. NWOSU (0-2) shot 47 percent from the field, 31 percent from behind the three-point line and 67 percent from the free-throw line.

Senior forward Jermaine Bransford chipped in 15 points, and junior guard Bryton Hobbs added 14. Senior guard Christian Mack came off the bench to score 12, and sophomore forward Landon DeMasters added 11 for the RiverHawks.

The Rangers were led in scoring by Jonathan Freemyer, who had 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists in 25 minutes as he battled foul trouble. Daryl Glover added 16 points, four assists and three rebounds, and Jesse Smith came off the bench to contribute 10 points and seven boards.

Both teams began the game hot from the field, and they jockeyed for position in the early going. The RiverHawks held the largest advantage in the first 15 minutes at five points, but the Rangers were able to tie the score at 29-29 with 4:30 to play in the opening half.

Free throws from DeMasters and a triple from junior forward Marcus Sheppard helped NSU push the lead out to six with 2:17 remaining in the first 20 minutes, and the home team would take a 40-35 lead into intermission.

Northeastern State came out on fire in the second half, pushing its lead all the way to 57-44 at the 13:29 mark. NWOSU was able to battle back, however, using a 15-5 run to get within three at 62-59 with 9:07 to play.

The Rangers could not get over the hump and regain the lead, as the home side made its free throws late and held off the charge to earn the season-opening victory.

NSU will stay home for a 7 p.m. meeting Nov. 15 with Arkansas Tech.
