ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Northeastern State football team was defeated 54-10 by No. 6 Missouri Western State Saturday afternoon at Spratt Stadium.
The Griffons (6-0, 5-0 MIAA) were celebrating their Homecoming, and they came out firing with 31 points in the first quarter. The squad added 23 points in the final three frames and the RiverHawks (0-6, 0-6 MIAA) could only counter with 10.
MWSU outgained NSU 547-306. The RiverHawks have now conceded at least 500 yards of total offense in four games this season, and they hit the 300-yard plateau in three games.
NSU sophomore quarterback
Thor Long finished 17 of 33 for 143 yards passing and two interceptions. Junior running back
Terrance Dixon carried the ball 13 times for 61 yards and his fifth touchdown in his last five games. Freshmen
Tank Richmond and
Josiah Reed combined for eight catches and 91 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior linebacker
Langston Jones and sophomore safety
Kyler Harris both finished with 12 tackles. Junior linebacker
Eddie General and freshman defensive lineman
Dakota Moran both registered their first-career sacks, and senior cornerback
Marquin Watts had his second-career interception.
Missouri Western jumped on top 33 seconds into the contest when quarterback Travis Partridge capped a four-play, 75-yard drive with a 22-yard scamper. The RiverHawks responded with a 7-play, 82-yard drive that ended in a 25-yard TD run from Dixon, who broke three tackles on his way to the endzone.
The balanced contest would quickly turn in favor of the Griffons after they scored on their next drive and NSU fumbled the ensuing kickoff. Just like that, the home side was off to the races. Before the RiverHawks could breathe, the score line read 31-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Missouri Western tacked on 10 more points before the half, and the two teams played out the final 30 minutes with just 16 points being scored.
Northeastern State returns to Tahlequah for a 2 p.m. kickoff Oct. 19 against Eastern New Mexico. The contest will be the lone non-conference bout for NSU this season.

NORTHEASTERN STATE COACH KENNY EVANS
Statement…
"It's not what we thought would happen here today. We had a great week of practice and showed up to play, but we had some letdowns in every area. You can't do that against a team of this caliber that's ranked No. 6 in the country. On the bright side, there were a lot of young guys who stepped up and made some plays. We played a lot of young guys today, and some who were seeing their first game action. We knew these first six games were going to be tough, even if we had not lost 10 starters. These last five games are going to be just as tough. We are going to have to pull together, and these young guys are going to have to learn some things. All of this youth is lending itself to the future of Northeastern State. If we had the team we started the team with, I think this would be a whole different situation than what we're in now. Now we're fighting for our first win, and that's going to be hard to come by because of the injury situation, but we're going to go out there and battle."
