TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team dropped a narrow 12-11 decision to Truman State Saturday afternoon at Thomas C. Rousey Field.
 
The RiverHawks fell to 3-3 overall and in the conference, while the Bulldogs improved to 2-4 both overall and in the MIAA.
 
NSU served as the visiting team on the scoreboard because TSU was originally scheduled to play host to the RiverHawks. The change of venue occurred due to poor weather conditions in Kirksville, Mo., and the contest was treated as a home game for the Bulldogs.
 
Northeastern State took a quick 4-0 lead, but Truman State scored three in the home half of the first and went ahead 5-4 after a two-run second inning.
 
NSU plated two in both the third and fourth to lead 8-5, but the home side scored seven unanswered runs over the course of the next three frames to lead 12-8 after six.
 
The visiting RiverHawks plated one in the eighth and two in the ninth, but they were unable to find a tying run as they lost by one run.
 
Senior center fielder Trent Wilkins led Northeastern State with a 3-for-5 day at the plate. He drove home two and scored twice. Junior designated hitter Kyle Singleton was 3-for-6 with two RBI and three runs. Junior right fielder Cody Robinson and junior third baseman Manuel Marmol also drove home two.
 
Senior Brandon Compton pitched the first 1.1 innings, but he allowed five runs on eight hits and was relieved by sophomore Kyle Shambaugh. Shambaugh (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits in 3.0 innings.
 
Sophomore Dymin Morillo, freshman Wilson Klutts and sophomore Hayden Walch combined to toss the final 3.2 frames. Morillo allowed three runs on two hits.
 
Blake Marino was 4-for-5 for the Bulldogs. He drove home two and scored a run. Paul Trenhaile recorded three hits and drove home three, while scoring twice. Joe Emery was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI.
 
Truman State outhit Northeastern State 15-13.
 
Tim Lee pitched the first 2.2 innings and earned a no-decision after allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits.
 
Mark Roberts (1-0) threw the final 6.1 innings and was awarded the victory. He allowed five runs on eight hits.
 
The two squads will lock up for a two-game set in Tahlequah Feb. 24 beginning at noon.
