TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team defeated Nebraska Kearney 8-6 Sunday afternoon at Thomas C. Rousey Field to take the series over the Lopers.
UNK (20-22, 17-19 MIAA) took the early lead just as the team had done in both Saturday contests, but hot bats late and quality relief pitching allowed the RiverHawks (25-19, 23-18 MIAA) to come from behind and earn the victory.
The Lopers took a 3-0 lead before NSU could respond, and the visitors pushed their lead to 6-1 after four complete. The home side countered with three in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a one-run lead, and Northeastern State added an insurance run in the eighth.
Sophomore
David Weber led the RiverHawks at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance. He recorded four runs batted in, three of which came on a bases loaded triple. Freshman
Andrew Walker was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Senior
Greg Jackson and junior
Kyle Singleton both hit home runs.
Senior
Frank Sprick (3-4) threw 1.1 innings of relief and earned the win. He did not allow a run and only conceded one base hit. Senior
Trevor Walch threw the last 2.0 innings and was awarded with his seventh save of the season. Sophomore
Hayden Walch started the game on the mound and lasted 3.1 innings. He was tagged for five runs on three hits.
UNK's Michael Hahn (1-4) gave up seven runs on five hits in 5.1 innings to suffer the loss. Scott Jameson tossed the final 2.2 frames and he allowed one run on four hits. Three different Lopers had two hits and two runs batted in. Both teams registered nine hits.
Northeastern State will now head to Emporia, Kan., for a doubleheader with Emporia State University that is set to begin at 1 p.m. April 23.
