Northeastern State, Lincoln Both Win Sunday

Blue Tigers take opening game 14-4, RiverHawks win second contest 12-6

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Northeastern State baseball team took the second of two games against Lincoln Sunday afternoon at the LU Baseball Field.
 
The Blue Tigers (7-33, 6-29 MIAA) captured the opening game 14-4, while the RiverHawks (27-21, 25-20 MIAA) secured the series finale 12-6.
 
NSU and LU have agreed to cancel Monday's single game, as it will not affect the final MIAA standings. The RiverHawks have finished sixth in their inaugural season in the league, and they are scheduled to travel to either Emporia State or Missouri Southern State in the opening round of the 2013 MIAA Championship May 2-4. The official brackets will be released by the conference early this week.
 
LU 14, NSU 4 (box score)
Northeastern State took an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the second, but the Blue Tigers plated three in the home half of the frame to pull ahead. NSU answered with three in the top of the third, but Lincoln scored four in the third, four in the fourth and three in the fifth to take an insurmountable lead and win the first game.
 
Sophomore Preston Cash and freshman Andrew Walker were both 2-for-3 at the plate to pace NSU. The green and white used five pitchers, with senior Craig George taking the loss. He started the game and allowed seven runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings.
 
Jonathan Grisham led the Blue Tigers with a 4-for-5 effort. He hit a home run, drove home two and scored three times. Colby Shepherd was 3-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored.
 
NSU 12, LU 6 (box score)
The visitors jumped on top 11-0 after three innings and held on for the six-run victory.
 
Sophomore Kyle Shambaugh tossed the first 4.1 innings and picked up the no-decision. He allowed two runs on two hits, while striking out three. Senior Frank Sprick (5-4) recorded the last two outs of the fifth inning to collect the win. Senior Trevor Walch threw the final 4.0 innings and earned his ninth save of the season. He did not allow a run, while only giving up two hits and striking out four.
 
Junior Kyle Singleton was 2-for-5 at the plate with his 15th home run of the season and four runs batted in. Senior Trent Wilkins and sophomore David Weber both had two hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored.
 
Colby Shepherd and Caleb Kemna combined for four of LU's nine hits. Grishman and Cashen both drove home two.
 
Lincoln starter Darren Lasley threw the first 1.2 innings. He allowed eight runs on five hits, while striking out two and walking two.
