JOPLIN, Mo. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team suffered its first setback of the season in a 2-0 loss to Missouri Southern State University Sunday afternoon at Hal Bodon Field.

The RiverHawks (5-1, 0-1 MIAA) dropped its conference opener, while the Lions (2-3-1, 1-0-1 MIAA) remained unbeaten in league play.

NSU outshot the home side by a 17-11 margin, but the visitors were unable to find the back of the net.

"Both teams played really hard. It was a tough surface to play on, and I thought we adjusted well at times. We made a lot of mistakes, and we paid the prices for them," NSU coach Chase Wooten said. "Missouri Southern deserves a ton of credit for sticking with their game plan and getting their goals when they could. We're a little frustrated with the overall play in the final third. That part has to get better."

Dana Wilhelm scored early in the second half after the two squads played to a scoreless draw in the first 45 minutes. The goal put NSU down for the first time this season. Kimmy Hulse added an insurance marker in the 67th minute and the two teams played out the remainder of the game without another score.

Sophomore forward Lindsey Latta led NSU with five shots. True freshman goalkeeper Jordan Woodruff (5-1) suffered her first collegiate loss after allowing the two goals and making three saves in 90 minutes.

Northeastern State will stay on the road for a 7 p.m. match against Lindenwood University Sept. 27 in St. Charles, Mo.
