NORTHEASTERN STATE COACH LARRY GIPSON
Opening Statement…
"We lost to a very good team tonight. I'm not disappointed so much in that we lost, but more in how we lost. (Northwest Missouri) ate us up with their physicality and size. We didn't have an answer for that. We also gave them open opportunities on the perimeter, which they were able to knock down. They shot the ball incredibly well. We are not a very good defensive team right now. We don't understand defensive rotations and we don't fully understand how hard you have to play on every single possession against the quality of teams in this league. Our offense is good enough to win games, but our defense is very poor."
Â
On the travel or playing three games in five days having an effect on the performance…
"That might have had something to do with it, but we just got back from an extended break. This was the hand we were dealt and there's nothing we can do about it. Northwest Missouri had the same deal, and it didn't seem to bother them."
Â
On the team…
"We've got a good group of kids that are competitive on one end of the floor, but they're not determined enough on defense. With Landon (DeMasters) out, we only have two players in Bryton (Hobbs) and Marcus (Sheppard) who have any experience playing in this league. We have too many players who are making too many costly mistakes. We need to find a way to fight through that. We are going to take tomorrow off and try to let our kids rest a little bit. They started back in school today, so we are going to get back in that groove. Hopefully we can have a good practice Wednesday and come out ready to go on Thursday. Every team goes through these things. We're being tested right now, and we just have to fight through the adversity."
