Hillcats defeat RiverHawks 12-11, Burgess, Robinson both go yard

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team lost a 12-11 non-conference tilt to Rogers State Tuesday afternoon at Rousey Field.
 
The RiverHawks fell to 8-10 overall, while the Hillcats improved to 11-7 on the year.
 
RSU jumped on top in the first when Alex Cochran scored on an RBI single from Chase Knott. NSU answered in the bottom of the second on an RBI bunt single from junior Justin Burgess. The bunt plated senior David Weber, who reached base on a single and moved over to third on a steal and a groundout from junior Tyler Wilkins.
 
The Hillcats manufactured three runs in the top of the third, but NSU quickly answered with two in the home half of the frame. Rogers State added an extra run in the fifth, but Northeastern State tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the home half of the frame.
 
The two teams exchanged six runs each in the next two innings, and a solo home run from Blake Gipson in the top of the eighth would be the deciding factor in a back-and-forth contest.
 
Gipson finished 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and three runs scored. Logan Palmer was 4-for-5, and Knott had two hits and three RBI for the visitors.
 
Senior Cody Robinson and Burgess both hit home runs, and Robinson moved into a tie for first in the nation with nine round-trippers this season. Burgess finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored.
 
RSU outhit NSU 14-13, and the Hillcats also committed more errors (5-2).
 
Zach Tyson (1-1) was the fourth pitcher used by Rogers State, and he earned the win after conceding two runs (one earned) on one hit in 1.1 innings. T.J. Law tossed a scoreless final two frames to pick up his second save of the year.
 
Burgess (0-1) came on to pitch in the eighth inning and took the loss after allowing the go-ahead solo home run to Gipson. Redshirt freshman Zach Poehl started for Northeastern State and lasted just 2.2 innings. He conceded four runs (three earned) on six hits. NSU used six pitchers in the game.
 
The RiverHawks will now head to Pittsburg, Kan., for a four-game road MIAA set with Pittsburg State March 14-16.
