Central Oklahoma defeats Northeastern State 4-0 in Edmond, Sterling goes the distance

EDMOND, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team suffered a 4-0 loss to Central Oklahoma in the series opener Friday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.
 
The RiverHawks (14-14, 10-11 MIAA) have now been shut out twice this season, which is the most in a single year since 2012. NSU did not get blanked once in 2013.
 
The Bronchos (18-7, 14-7 MIAA) scored single runs in the first, second, fourth, and sixth innings to earn the victory. UCO's Jared Sterling (5-2) pitched a nine-inning complete-game shutout. He allowed six hits, struck out six and only walked three, while throwing just 123 pitches.
 
Northeastern State junior starter Kyle Shambaugh (2-3) threw nearly as many pitches (120) but lasted just 4.0 innings in the losing effort. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, while striking out two and issuing a career-high seven walks. Freshman Bobby Sehgal tossed the final 4.0 frames, conceding just one run on three hits.
 
NSU's six hits were split up between six different batters. UCO finished with eight hits, with Phillip Wilson, Matt Johnson and Cesar Wong finishing with two each. Wilson scored half of Central Oklahoma's runs.
 
Northeastern State and Central Oklahoma will begin a doubleheader at 1 p.m. March 29.
